Nuclear Physics Institute (IKP)

IKP is conducting basic research in the fields of nuclear and elementary particle physics. The physics program addresses two big questions of modern physics, namely the matter-anti-matter asymmetry of our universe and a basic understanding of the building blocks matter is comprised of.

In 2018, the supervisory boards of the FZJ and GSI Darmstadt decided to end the activities of the Institute of Nuclear Physics at the FZJ and to transfer them to GSI to secure the IKP competencies. This TransFAIR process will take place in stages, began on January 1, 2021 and will be completed by December 31, 2027.

The scientific responsibility for the IKP activities has been transferred to GSI on January 1, 2021.

The operation of the IKP accelerator facilities, the JULIC cyclotron and the Cooler Synchrotron COSY, was terminated at the end of 2023.
